news casts are filled with stories regarding natural and man made disasters,” Mary says, “and yet many of us do not have disaster plans or disaster kits prepared.”  The Kewanee Library has partnered with the Red Cross and other Emergency Response organizations

Grants cont. on page 4

The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) has awarded three grants to Kewanee Public Library this fall.  A total of $75,797 was granted to help KPL offer our community better resources and programming in several important areas: business, emergency preparedness and bilingual services.

The largest grant was awarded to a proposal submitted by Jill Gray of KPL and Beth Duttlinger of the Black Hawk East Gust E. Lundberg Learning Resources Center.  The “Taking Care of Business” grant will enable our Library and fifteen others in a three-county area to greatly enhance their collections of business related materials.  It will provide programs and training for job-seekers and those planning to start their own businesses.  The project manager will also develop a

website that will provide links to existing services for these needs.  Ultimately, a goal of this project is better employment opportunities and increased growth in small businesses,” Jill explained.

The “Be Smart, Be Ready” program was designed by Mary Oberg to help folks in the Kewanee region prepare for emergencies.  Headlines and

New Software Means Better Service

From October into December our customers will notice changes as the Library records are transferred to our new software system and various features of the new system are activated.  Library staff members are temporarily processing holds without the aid of a software system (the old-fashioned

way!).  While the final data load transfer is being prepared in November, the Library will temporarily be unable to process new materials – so there may be a brief delay in getting some items onto the shelves and into the hands of our customers.

Once the new software is up and running, we think that our customers will notice the change for the better.  We’ll have a customer interface that is much more attractive, is easier to use and has more features.  We’ll be able to get some routine tasks done more quickly, allowing us to provide better and more efficient service for you.
